Arlington Cemetery

We went to Washington to see the wreaths at Arlington. It is a very moving and humbling place to visit, to see all the graves of soldiers who have died defending the country. The markers flow over the hills to the east of the city. On the highest point stands Arlington House, which played a pivotal role in the creation of the cemetery.

White House

Wreaths decorated the White House for the Christmas season. A great tree stood on the lawn. No snow lay on the ground.

Washington Monument

We walked along the reflecting pool to the Lincoln Memorial as the sun was setting one day in DC. This is a great spot to view the Washington Memorial. At this end you get an unobstructed view of the obelisk and it’s reflection. The sun was setting and the white stone caught the red sunset.

Lincoln Memorial

Lincoln on his judgement seat dominates the interior space. The Gettysburg address writ large covers the right niche. White stone cools the air beneath the high ceiling.

World War II Memorial

Water Marble and Bronze

I think December is an especially moving time to visit the WWII Memorial, with the chill of winter starting to creep in. Columns set in a circle around the central pool represent each state. Bronze friezes show men and women contributing to the war effort.
