Dollar Thrifty Auto Group

The headquarters of Dollar Thrifty is in Tulsa, OK. I worked here for half a year after returning from the UK. Joy and I stayed in an apartment six blocks away, and I was able to walk to work most days, even the snowy days. The people were really great, and the company seems to have it’s ducks in a row. I recommend their stock.


Bad Moon Rising

On the plains we get some truly wonderful sunsets. I captured the sky one winter evening from outside our apartment. As the moon rose on a foggy evening earlier in the week, I pushed the exposure and got an eerie moon rise.

Spring brought with it some strange visitors. These large moths made their appearance on the walls of our apartment in April. Being nearly the size of one’s hand, these moths ranged in colors from grey to brown to a dusty red. The antennae are very distinctive.

Rhinoceros Pens

I think the Rhino pens must have been redone recently. I can not remember being able to walk up so closely to the animals before. To be so close to these huge rhinos makes the heart beat faster. You could hear the loud thumps as they stomped their feet.


King of Beasts

I was fortunate one evening in October to catch the King roaring for his dinner. I was volunteering at a Halloween theme night reading stories for the Library. The night was cold and the lion was hungry. Truly a magnificent sound. The video is probably available for viewing in the TCCL media department.

Siberian Tiger

The zoo has a great habitat for lions, tigers, and bears. Of course, the felines normally are quite languid, lounging in the shade or sleeping in their caves. On this cool day just before Christmas the Siberian tigers were out enjoying the day.

Snapping Turtle

The Oklahoma Aquarium opened in 2003, and we went to see the exhibits. They have some wonderful animals, including a huge snapping turtle. I caught it resting on its log with it’s nose breaking the surface. The turtle must be three feet across!

My favorite exhibit was the octopus tank. We came back around to the tank at feeding time. The octopus spent most of it’s time in a little cave at the bottom of the tank hidden from view, except for the end of an arm curling out. But when a bit of fish stuck on the end of a stick was waved through the water, the octopus shot out to the top of the tank to nab the food. The membranous skin between the arms billowed out to cover the top of the tank. It was ghastly but cool too.


Shark From Below

Shark Tank

The highlight of our trip to the aquarium was the shark exhibit. The tank is built with transparent tunnels leading to a clear viewing dome beneath the water. Lit from above, the sharks swim incessantly through the water. There are three sharks and many silver fish. The fish are faster than the sharks and are safe from being eaten.
