Maymont

Maymont is the estate of wealthy railroad magnate James H. Dooley. Built in the late nineteenth century, it is lavish yet comfortable. The house combines many influences, especially French Art Nouveau. Carved wood, fanlights of stained glass, and finely crafted wood furniture highlight the furnishings. It was an early adopter of electricity throughout its construction, and even employs an elevator.

Gardens

The gardens at Maymont are made up of several groups, featuring a Japanese garden with a huge waterfall and an Italian garden. Various animals are kept in another part of the estate. These include ducks, chickens, pigs, and goats in the farm pans, and foxes, bears, cattle, bison, and elk in large paddocks.

Place of Rest

Sited on the banks of the James river, Hollywood Cemetery is an old and eminently respectable burial site. Established in 1847, the quiet setting is home to two U.S. Presidents, Monroe and Tyler, and the Confederate president, Jefferson Davis. Many soldiers of the Civil War are buried at Hollywood with simple markers, along with prominent families of Richmond with elegant monuments.
